Hi, my name’s Jed. I’m a husband, father to three amazing girls, therapist, seminary professor, and author.
As you can probably tell, I love spending time with my family. I also enjoy reading, hiking, BBQing, mountain biking and heading to the beach. Around our house, we are easy going, and you’ll find that same relaxed, fun approach to life on this site.
I recently attended a training where I was asked to pick a superhero blogger identity. Deciding on Spiderman was easy. Not only has he been my favorite since I was a kid, Spiderman and I also have a lot in common. We both:
- Genuinely care about people
- Have a quirky since of humor, and
- Most of all, spend a lot of time recovering from mistakes
One of the things I love about Spiderman is that he is an imperfect hero (which brings me hope). Spiderman is famous for shooting webbing from his wrist. The only problem is that his web-shooters are continually malfunctioning. Sometimes these mishaps result in the bad guy getting away. At other times, these misfires happen while Spiderman is swinging from building to building, causing him to plummet toward the ground. These malfunctions happen quite often, leading Spiderman to become an expert at recovering from errors.
I can relate. My life has by no means, been mistake free. On this site you will not find blog posts entitled “Three Steps to Having a Perfect Life Just Like Mine.” As a therapist and Christ follower, I am well aware that people with a perfect life don’t exist. However, some people have earned an advanced degree in hiding their mistakes… however, I’m not one of them. On this site I’ll share with you my triumphs, failures, and strategies that I use to bounce back more quickly. My aim is to be the Spiderman of leadership and relationships—an imperfect human being who learns from his mistakes and knows how to recover from them well. This blog is as real as it gets and on this sight it is my privilege to share with you the good, the bad, and the ugly. This isn’t a blog that will lead you to perfection, but it will encourage you to tryout new things, learn from your mistakes and discover how to, like Spiderman, accept flaws as a natural part of being human, and then learn to bounce back quickly.
And recovering from mistakes and challenges is something that I know a lot about. The story of why this blog began goes back to January 2008, when I was facing a number of personal challenges in my life. Because of these challenges I embarked on a search for answers that led me first to the church, then to psychology and ultimately to the Bible. During my journey I was initially given the common “go-to” Christin answers of:
- Pray more
- Engage in regular Bible study
- Attend church
- and trust God for the results
While these are all excellent spiritual disciplines (and I highly encourage engaging in all of these things on a regular basis), none of these them were directly related to the challenges I faced. This left me more discouraged and frustrated than ever. Eventually, my search led me to the psychology program at Southern California Seminary, a school I had graduated from with a Master’s of Divinity degree a few years earlier. I vividly remember sitting in that first class, listening to the professor teach and having verse after verse from my seminary days came to mind. I remember thinking to myself Wow, this is exactly what the Bible teaches! The practical and applicable tools I gained while in this program were exactly the types of resources I had been looking for–and these are the types of tools that will be highlight on this site!
Today life is good. I have the honor of serving as a support system for others who are struggling, as well as for those wanting to take the exciting next steps in their leadership and relational growth. Although the storms have passed and I am enjoying some of life’s’ incredible moments, I realize that there are many passionate Christ followers who continue to hurt and struggle just like I did.
If you are currently hurting and on your own journey searching for answers, this blog is for you.
If you are passionate about taking your leadership and relationship skills to the next level, this blog is for you.
